The left print is Leonard=da=Vinci (1452~1519)fs drawing. The size is 13.2*9.5cm. This is smaller than a post card. This is the picture that Leonard just imagined the first impression on the small paper in his hand for very short minutes (or seconds) in order to paint a bigger one(=tableau). By the drawing we can see the inside of Leonardfs brain. Of course this is a very important art work.

The next is Rembrandtfs(1606~1669) drawing. He was 150 years younger than Leonard. This drawing is small, too(24*20cm). This drawing isnft the tableaufs esquisse like Leonardfs drawing but sketch. Lately we call gcroquish. Perhaps he drew after a model. Maybe this was drawn for a few minutes. By the way this womanfs brow is wonderful. This expression of her brow surprised us.

As the painterfs conception, this drawing is an exercise(=etude).

Like this, old masters were distinguished drawings or exercises from tableaus. As the mastersf conception they drew drawings or exercises distinction from the tableau.

The first painter that didnft distinguish them is Daumier(1808~1879), I think. Daumier painted drawings on canvas as tableaus. He was 200 years younger than Rembrandt. gSinging Pierroth is a small picture(35.0*26.5cm). Daumier painted it for a few minutes. This is the very oil croquis.

I knew this picture since young days. In that days I drew in a piece of paper for eight hours. And I painted an oil picture for two weeks.

gAh, I want to paint quickly like Daumier.h How much I hope it!

Daumier didnft think this picture as an exercise or an esquisse. I think Daumier painted it as the very tableau. If I talk about this like an historian of art, the paintersf conception just developed. But I think that art hasnft developed. Because in this page, the most charming picture is Leonardfs. It is the oldest.

The impressionist following Daumier showed us new oil croquis. These painters painted oil croquises as usual. It is for several minutes that Lautrec (1864~1901) just finished painting such a big picture (186*93). Lautrec painted bigger pictures (about 3m square) quickly like drawing croquises.

gA woman doing up her hairh by Degas (1834~1917), very famous gImpression/sun-riseh by Monet (1840~1926). Please watch carefully how brushing these pictures finished. But Degas didnft use brush but pastel.

Generally not few people think such painting technique isnft right. But oil color is a tool for painting quickly. gThe technique of oil paintingh by Langlais said gThe pictures painted most quickly (without touching up) can be proof against enough long time.h

Ladies and gentlemen, please go to art museums and watch masterpieces carefully.

To burnt momentary inspiration in canvas, it is the painting soul.

However only soul or spirits arenft enough.

When we want to paint landscape we must grip the extending earth (or water). When we want to paint nudes we must catch the flesh and constitution. In other words good pictures need space, quality feeling and quantity feeling. We want picture surface like china. Everybody can find the picture good momently, on the other hand he must not grow weary for many days, many months and many years in his roomf wall. We want to watch shot-live in flower pictures and such a gesture in animal pictures.

It is not good to think these affairs in our just painting. We must get the affairs naturally without thinking.

The last two works I show you are Japanese picture(14 century) and Chinese picture(13 century). In China there were ikkigakis with Zen thought (=Buddhism) 1000 years ago. And many Japanese painters has yearned after them.
